In response to the uncertainty of recent times, Shell draws on a heightened state of fragility and alertness governing both the minutiae of everyday life and the greater relationships between us. The title, which references the feeling of walking on eggshells, or the awareness that each move must be carefully considered or risk causing damage, also draws on the shell as a protective body, a container for growth. The string of eggshells rising toward the ceiling suggests a ritual gesture marking the precarious passage of time, but also a controlled act of accumulation. We are at once aware of both the eggshells’ potential to break and their resistance under pressure. In contrast, in the video a looming foot cracks the shells against a glass surface, the gesture intensified by the layering of sound and image. Seen from below, it is a reminder of the weight of instability.
